Extreme Weather Shelter

Department: - Severe Weather Shelter

Position: “Volunteer” Shelter Staff Worker”

Summary: The primary purpose of the position is to commit for two 12 hour shifts per month ( 8 pm - 8 am )

Successful applicants will have the ability to work with all guests, including those with possible drug and alcohol addictions and mental health issues. Skillful and tactful direction is necessary for staff to maintain guest dignity and confidentiality. This will ensure the well being and safety of guests and shelter staff.

Hours: 8 PM - 8 AM The shift will be cancelled if no guests arrive in the shelter by midnight.

Expectation to attend all training sessions and scheduled monthly meetings.

Responsibilities: Maintaining an excellent relationship with all shelter staff workers, and guests, as laid out within the BETHS Operations Manual and Code of Conduct.

Maintain and excellent relationship with other agencies sharing the shelter facilities. ie: Whispers of Hope - Boundary Habitat for Humanity.

Filling out and keeping accurate records of registered guests.
Answering the telephone, communicating in a polite, courteous, and understanding manner, and referring all messages to the appropriate person involved.

Making regular rounds inside/outside of the facility to insure our guests have been cared for and that the health and safety of everyone is monitored and addressed.
. Reporting any identified problems to other staff members
. Keep a neat, clean and tidy environment.
. Co-operating with emergency agencies.
. Co-operating with BETHS Staff and other agency personnel.
. Perform other related duties as assigned.

Desirable Minimum Qualifications:
Proficiency in writing and speaking the English language.
Previous social service work is an asset.
Previous social service certification or equivalent training is an asset.
Current basic first aid training and CPR certification is an asset.
Knowledge o f Mental Health, Social Development, Housing, and other Service Agencies within our community.
Knowledge of the complexities surrounding Mental Health, Addictions, Homelessness and Gender related issues.
